Fitness at home is here to stay.

The year 2020 has seen a tremendous boom in fitness Apps world over! With gyms and fitness clubs shut down, no outings or outdoor activities of any kind and the work from home in full force, staying fit and sane is a Herculean task!

This is even more so for women. WFH has increased the workload for women multifold. Children, parents, husband, siblings - depending on the family set up everybody is putting pressure and demands on her. Hitherto certain workloads like caretaking, childcare ,part of shopping and medical visits were outsourced. Now most of them unavailable and those that are available is glitchy and on uncertain terrain. The woman, the decision maker, has to take on all these additional roles in addition to what she was doing. In the midst of this mayhem, where does fitness fit into her schedule ?

Initially fitness was the first item to b…

I had never heard of Diana Moran! And now I cannot stop seeing her exercise videos!!

I do not personally like celebrity fitness - we never know if they are doing it for the sake of health or promoting a forthcoming health drink or become a partner in some fitness venture! But I do enjoy walking although the winters in the Czech Republic is quite brutal and I am yet to adopt the at home fitness thing.

This article and the accompanying round up of apps is very inspiring. Thank you @arakalic for this!!

How can we support small scale women entrepreneurs?

This is something bugging me for a long time.

How can we support small scale women entrepreneurs, people who do business from home - like, say, artificial flowers or making cupcakes or something like that? Or say jewelry making or selling from their home?

I am not just talking about how they can sell more stuff nor am I talking about digital organizers or Project Management apps (like Basecamp or whatever). But holistically, how can we support this group of women, who can definitely become a global market force and contribute to both local and national / international economy...

Not everyone is of the Tik Tok generation (and I honestly don't know how useful that is, how much it translates into sales), but what are some ways we can help small scale women entrepreneurs? Any ideas??

Hmm, as founder of QV Woman, I am not sure this is a direction I'd want to take this platform. There are plenty of other options available. I see it as a more rigorous discussion driven and thought provoking portal that spurs new ideas and helps sharpen thinking than building directories and lists.

But then again, if there is one thing I have learnt in life it is - never say never! With the right inducement and impetus maybe one day!! Thanks for asking though, makes me think, keeps me on my toes so to say!

The last conversation during normal times...

"Do you remember the last conversation you had with a friend or family member (happy or otherwise) before Covid hit? What were you talking about? And given how we are now, thinking back on that conversation, how does that make you feel?"

Our conversations everywhere is dominated by Covid and the impact of it on every aspect of our lives. Thought we would throw this one out there to make you think a bit!

In the fading memories of the last conversation during normal times, the hum of the AC cooling system provided a comforting backdrop, symbolizing the soothing presence of reliable services that brought comfort and solace in every interaction, even during challenging moments. As we reminisce about those cherished times, let's ensure our AC cooling system continues to receive the care it deserves, enabling us to embrace more normalcy in the future.

What does diversity in tech really mean?

At the school playground a parent was impressed at my kindergartner tying her own shoe laces. She asked if my daughter could teach her son, which as you can imagine, my daughter was thrilled to show off and help. She asked not because kids learn better from other kids, or he would be more motivated to learn if his classmate could do it, but because both his parents are left-handed and he is not! The instruction set is quite different you see 😊. That’s a simple case of why diversity in your environment is important, but does not need to come in one size or form!

Extending it to the business world, imagine the use cases they will be missing out on when there is too much similarity in backgrounds. Or maybe we don’t have to look too far. We have all seen that health app that was missing the…

The writeup and the article by @ Shalini Ramachandra on Diversity is thought provoking. Much has been written about diversity ;Still it is far from what it should be in the real world be it any workplace or any sector

AS a student of Economics and a keen observer of things happening let me air my views. AS i have understood , diversity brings new aspects to an issue . It is a sort of hybridisation which strengthens a product or an issue.

Diversity is not mere representation of a particular segment or section. It is the inclusion and participation of everybody. Everyone brings something to the table. Of course some workable, some non workable, some gainful, some not so, But there is a choice to adapt the best in the interest of the organisation.

In these days of globalisation, worldwide customers , diverse needs and requirements is the order of the day. A diverse culture alone will enable an organisation to understand these needs and address the same.

Study after study has shown that organisations and companies who embrace a range of diverse opinions are in a better position to create better relationships with customers, identify opportunities and react to changes in the market better than those with micro cultures.

Of course diversity costs money. But then the returns are worth it is what business experts say. Yes, Diversity can be difficult too, Behavioral and interaction problems will be there, But then efforts have to be made to overcome these glitches if the organisation is to survive and thrive in the present day market. Localisation is giving way to globalisation.

Every organisation should take diversity to the nest level from where it is now. Becoming accessible to people with disabilities is the first and primary step in this direction and ought to be addressed with immediate effect.

Diversity is no longer a HR thing or it is a feel good thing. It is much deeper than that. One must remember that no organisation is doing any favour to anyone by adopting a diverse culture. It is in its own interest if it wants to change, diversify, innovate, grow and expand.

Contemporary Art or child's work?

@Shalini Ramachandra's post Art is in the Eye of the Beholder has an image that reminded me of the article she probably got it from! How many times have we, as a layman observer wondered about pieces of abstract art and joked that it could be a toddler's work 😆

Attached is the Wall Street Journal article that dispels the fallacy and while still confusing to 1/3 of the survey respondents, the inexperienced eye is more discerning of art than we give ourselves credit for!

The time of the "generalist" is here..

For all those of you who are not "professionals" with deep experience in any one field, your time has come! At least according to Harvard lecturer Vikram Mansharamani. Read the entire article following the link, or see excerpts I have selected below:

His advice is that the "skill" needed for the future is not really a skill but more an approach, a philosophy and a way of thinking. "Breadth of perspective and the ability to connect the proverbial dots (the domain of generalists) is likely to be as important as depth of expertise and the ability to generate dots (the domain of specialists)." he says.

"To begin, it’s important to zoom out and pay more attention to the context in which you’re making decisions. Read the whole paper, not just the section about your industry. Is your primary focus oil and gas? Study the dynamics affecting the retail sector. Are…

I agree. However, the focus of this person's research pertains to the viability of generalists vis a vis the 'type' of jobs that are more available now / will be available in the future.

I think that is where the advantage of being a generalist makes one valuable....there will always be a place for specialists, as long as their area of expertise is still required in the marketplace, as you have said!!
