"The story of an hour" by Kate Chopin

This is Chopin's most famous work, written in 1894. She was a feminist writer and was way ahead of her times, in thought and words!! I have mixed feelings about this. Have a read:

"The Story of An Hour"

Kate Chopin (1894)

Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.

It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard's name leading the list of "killed." He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender…

In case anyone is interested, the story collection "Distant View of a Minaret and Other Stories" by Alifa Rifaat is another one that will resonate with this. Esp. the title story- Distant View of a Minaret is very similar to 'Story of an hour' but Rifaat, to our knowledge was uninfluenced by Western culture... We could not find a free copy of the story but can of course be purchased. That and other stories is a good read, definitely! Here is a link from Amazon.

The Elephant and the Rope

This is NOT my original story and I do not know the origin, I would say there are many versions f it in different cultures. I was very sad when I first heard this, but as a woman, a career woman more so, it has a strong message for us.

A huge elephant was tied to a thin rope and pegged to the ground. A man passing by was shocked to see this. He was amazed how such a large animal was secured with such a thin rope. At the time, the elephant's trainer came out and saw the man's astonishment. He replied calmly- the rope cannot contain the elephant. All it takes is a simple tug from the large animal, or probably just start to walk and it will come away. But you see, from a young age we tie the elephants with this rope and at that age…

My Story: Super Carpe Diem Woman

In 2010, I spent a lot of time with a good friend, Craig Dunham. Craig had ALS. It's an awful disease and robs you slowly of all muscle movement, so Craig lost his ability to move or speak. Despite all this, he still found ways to communicate, to smile, and to live in the best way he could until he was unable to swallow. His faith was strong and he didn't fear death.

His example of faith and perseverance has inspired me to live a full life myself. I lead an annual Walk to Defeat ALS dressed as the fictional super-hero: Super Carpe Diem Woman and the motto I'm known for is "Carpe Diem" or Seize the Day. I especially like that CD are the same initials as Craig Dunham.

My Facebook page has a picture of me as Super Carpe Diem Woman and for my 60th birthday, February 26,…

Carpe Diem Day - What a thoughtful gift from your children for your birthday this year! I did not have the privilege to meet Craig Dunham, but am familiar with your efforts for defeating ALS. I think you will cherish Carpe Diem Day and something all your friends and loved ones associate with you!

Storytelling: READ ME FIRST....

Storytelling is an ancient and time tested practice. It is a way of keeping traditions alive, about telling future generations about issues and it is about narrating things in an engaging manner that tells another who you are!

From engaging kids to corporate narratives of their own evolution, stories bring out the human side of societies, cultures and ourselves...

Create a new post and write your story. Tell us also why this story resonates with you, why you like it and how you came to know about it if you want to. If this is an original story, please mention so. if not, mention the origin or author if you know. If you don't know, just make sure to mention it is not your own original story...say something like "This is something I read a while ago", or " This was told to me by ..." or something to that…
